D-Link’s new routers look like sci-fi robot insects

LAS VEGAS—Router company D-Link has announced a set of new high-performance home routers, and they look rather exciting.

Boasting four, six, or eight antennas and armed with a bright red angular body, they resemble giant robot bugs, or perhaps oversized Swiss Army knives that'll take your finger off if you handle them wrong.

The six antenna AC3200, available now for an eye-watering $309.99, can operate at up to 600Mbps over 2.4GHz, and twin 1.3Gbps channels at 5GHz when used with 802.11ac adaptors. Four gigabit Ethernet ports provide wired connectivity (with a fifth for upstream WAN links), and it sports both USB2 and USB3 ports for media sharing. A 1GHz dual core processor powers it all.

The slightly better in some ways, slightly worse in other ways, four antenna AC3100 will be available in the second quarter. This will support 1Gbps at 2.4GHz and 2.165Gbps at 5GHz. It'll have the same array of wired connections as well as a 1.4GHz dual core processor.

The truly monstrous eight antenna AC5300 will offer 1Gbps at 2.4GHz and two 2.165Gbps channels at 5GHz, again with the 1.4GHz dual core processor. It's scheduled for a second-quarter release

D-Link also has a new USB adaptor to connect to these high-speed networks. The AC1900 is a USB3-connected 802.11ac sphere (or perhaps a Toclafane that escaped annihilation), and this supports 600Mbps connections at 2.4GHz and 1300Mbps at 5GHz. It, too, is due to arrive in the second quarter.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Review and Giveaway

Few smartphones are as aggressively marketed as Samsung’s Galaxy S5. The S5 can no longer be considered brand-new — but it  is  Samsung’s flagship, at least for the next few months. With a gorgeous screen, a capable camera, a waterproof build, and a user-replaceable battery, the Galaxy S5 has a lot to offer… at least on paper. Let’s find out how good it really is. What Makes This Review Different There are about a million Galaxy S5 reviews out there. Why should you read this one? Two keys points make our review different: We bought our own device . Unlike many tech blogs, we don’t use a review unit Samsung gave us. We went out to the store and bought one, just like you would. This means everything you read here is truly impartial – we owe Samsung nothing. We used it for more than a month . Some sites rush to be the first to publish a review on a new device. That’s not how we do things. I used the Galaxy S5 as my main (and only) Android phone for nearly two months,...
