Meet Dubs, Doppler Labs’ Reinvention Of The Lowly Earplug

If you feel like you’re losing your hearing, it’s because you quite possibly are. In fact, more than six million people in the United States between the ages of 18 to 44 suffer from hearing loss.

To tackle the problem, Fritz Lanman’s new company Doppler Labs is announcing Dubs Acoustic filters, otherwise known as extra fancy ear plugs.

From the website:

We wanted plugs that didn’t protrude out of your ears – making it embarrassing to wear at a club or a sports event – and didn’t get in the way of your listening experience, but we couldn’t find anything like that. So we decided to invent it.

Dubs is the brain child of Lanman and co-founder and Doppler Labs CEO Noah Kraft. The idea here is that a totally mechanical device can be attractive, immersive, and improve the audio experience without sacrificing sound.

The Dubs are built of 17 individual mechanical pieces (made from materials like steel, polymer foams and silicone) that reduce general volume by an average of 12 decibels. This allows you to go to something like Coachella, with fourteen hours of head-pounding music, without feeling like your ears are ringing for the next 48 hours.

“When we were designing Dubs, we thought a lot how we could make them truly immersive,” said Kraft, who has spent his career in the media world, including consulting for Google, where he became passionate for the wearables industry. “We didn’t want them to be like hearing aids that are flesh-toned, but rather wanted them to have a sleek look that didn’t distract other people who are talking to our customers

The Dubs do just that. They sit in the ear like a black little button, but aren’t visible when you’re facing the wearer head-on.

But perhaps more impressive than the form or function is the price.

To make Dubs accessible to all potential consumers (not just audiophiles, but folks who just walked into a concert), Doppler is pricing the product at $25, with availability starting now from Soul Cycle. Best Buy will also be selling the Dubs starting in November.

As you might remember, Doppler Labs is one of two companies started by Fritz Lanman recently. Doppler Labs, in particular, is run by Kraft, Lanman and Dan Wiggins, with Dubs launching as its very first product.

Build Your Own Awesome Personal 3D Avatar with Avatara

Do you use social networks and want to build your own awesome 3D avatar? Maybe you want to send someone a cute cuddly image of yourself (kind of)? Or maybe you have your own ideas of what you would do with an Avatar… Well look no further than Avatara which I discovered from the MakeUseOf directory . You can create 3d avatars out of pre-set up templates or create your own from scratch. To start, visit Avatara’s homepage . You will see this screen: Click Get Started to umm, get started! That will take you to this screen: You see that you can build your own Avatar using an uploaded head shot like the Obama one above (just an example, guys). Or roll with one of their awesome avatars. I chose to start with a blank avatar by clicking Start with a blank avatar at the bottom of the screen. That takes you to here: I clicked on the filter at the top and told it to filter out everything but male characters and then I saw this: I rolled with Buck and continued. You need to click Select...

MoviePass drops pricing to under $7 per month, if you opt for the annual plan

MoviePass, the subscription service that lets consumers pay a monthly fee to see unlimited movies in theaters across the U.S., is slashing its prices yet again. The company announced today it’s now offering its service for $6.95 per month, down from the current price of $9.95 per month, when customers commit to a one-year subscription plan. That works out to a flat fee of $89.95 annually. The deal is a limited-time promotion, as opposed to a permanent pricing change, but MoviePass didn’t say how long the offer is valid. However, it is open to both new and existing subscribers – the latter who would receive a 25 percent savings on their current subscription if switching over to the annual plan. This is not the first time that MoviePass has dropped its pricing. When the company introduced its $9.95 per month, one-movie-per-day plan this August, down from $15 for 2 movies per month (or more in select markets like L.A. and NYC, and going as high as $50), it saw so many new sign-up...
