Smart Plug Startup Zuli Raises $1.65M And Kicks Off New Pre-Orders

Smart home automation startup Zuli has just raised $1.65 million in venture funding following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The company has created the Zuli Smartplug, a connected outlet that plugs into your existing ones and gains Bluetooth LE powers. A single outlet provides basic smart features, including in-home control of lights and appliances plugged into them, but when you get three or more Zuli smartplugs together, the magic really starts to happen.

Three or more Zuli smartplugs in a single home form a “Bluetooth mesh” network that lets each determine a user’s location within the home, identifying when they move from one room to another and adjusting settings accordingly. You can program the Zuli app to then turn on your TV and stereo when you walk into a living room, for instance, and to turn off the lights in your kitchen when you leave.

This new seed round adds to the $175,000 the company raised during its crowdfunding campaign, and should help with the startup achieve a key milestone: Actually shipping to backers. After originally targeting a June 2014 launch date, Zuli is now aiming for November, a delay which is unfortunate for backers but also not unheard of for a Kickstarter hardware campaign. Company co-founders Taylor Umphreys, Sid Bhargava and Ben Chang must’ve done enough to convince its seed investors (including Menlo Ventures, Winklevoss Capital, Logitech, DeNA and more) it will be successful with its initial shipping run, however. The startup is also launching a second batch of pre-orders via its website today, with an early 2015 target ship date.
Zuli_Plug_Prongs_BackZuli’s approach to smart home services is simple by design, and focused on streamlining the number of parts required, as well as the complications of installation and maintenance. In addition to providing smart controls and also allowing dimming of any lights with dimmable bulbs, the Zuli smartplug also monitors energy consumption, giving it a nice angle for those interested in conserving their power expenditure.

The time for the popularization of the smart home is coming, and Zuli has a take that differs in key ways from the approaches of larger companies like Philips and Belkin. This early venture backing might provide just the spark it needs to come out of the starting gate without too many more hiccups.

Build Your Own Awesome Personal 3D Avatar with Avatara

Do you use social networks and want to build your own awesome 3D avatar? Maybe you want to send someone a cute cuddly image of yourself (kind of)? Or maybe you have your own ideas of what you would do with an Avatar… Well look no further than Avatara which I discovered from the MakeUseOf directory . You can create 3d avatars out of pre-set up templates or create your own from scratch. To start, visit Avatara’s homepage . You will see this screen: Click Get Started to umm, get started! That will take you to this screen: You see that you can build your own Avatar using an uploaded head shot like the Obama one above (just an example, guys). Or roll with one of their awesome avatars. I chose to start with a blank avatar by clicking Start with a blank avatar at the bottom of the screen. That takes you to here: I clicked on the filter at the top and told it to filter out everything but male characters and then I saw this: I rolled with Buck and continued. You need to click Select...

MoviePass drops pricing to under $7 per month, if you opt for the annual plan

MoviePass, the subscription service that lets consumers pay a monthly fee to see unlimited movies in theaters across the U.S., is slashing its prices yet again. The company announced today it’s now offering its service for $6.95 per month, down from the current price of $9.95 per month, when customers commit to a one-year subscription plan. That works out to a flat fee of $89.95 annually. The deal is a limited-time promotion, as opposed to a permanent pricing change, but MoviePass didn’t say how long the offer is valid. However, it is open to both new and existing subscribers – the latter who would receive a 25 percent savings on their current subscription if switching over to the annual plan. This is not the first time that MoviePass has dropped its pricing. When the company introduced its $9.95 per month, one-movie-per-day plan this August, down from $15 for 2 movies per month (or more in select markets like L.A. and NYC, and going as high as $50), it saw so many new sign-up...
