One of the most popular programs for compressing and decompressing files is WinZip. It has been around since I first started using computers, and I can still remember the first time I downloaded something that was “zipped” and trying to figure out what the heck I was supposed to do to actually use the file. Of course, times have changed, and pretty much everyone knows how to use some type of file decompression program to get access to the files tucked inside.
However, looking at zipped files on the iPhone, things are not always so easy. However, WinZip recently launched an iOs application that is designed to make viewing the contents of a compressed file so much easier. It takes what used to be a cumbersome process and makes it so easy that anyone can do it. If you have been looking for a way to view the contents of compressed files while on the go, the WinZip application will be perfect for you.
Set Up
Seeing as this is an iPhone application, you will need to head over to the app store and search for “WinZip” orclick here, and download the app.
Once the app has finished installing, an icon will appear on your springboard, however, this icon does not do anything besides give you a quick rundown on how to use the application. Actually using the app is all done through the native iOs applications.
Types of files supported
Before you start decompressing anything, you need to know about the kinds of files that this application can handle. The list of file types is very extensive, so chances are great that if there is something you want to extract, WinZip can handle it. Check out the complete list of file types: .txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .rtf, .pdf, .key, .numbers, .pages, .htm, .htm, .jsp, .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, .png, and .gif.
Viewing Files from Email
The number one reason to use this application is if someone sends you something in an email that you need to view. Now, because this is an iPhone, you will not be able to download the file as you would on a computer and mess around with it, but with the help of the WinZip application, you will be able to preview it.
When you receive an email with a zipped file, you simply click it, let your iPhone load it and then click it again. A dialog window will pop up, giving you the option to open with WinZip. If you click that, it will open the WinZip application with all the items contained in the compressed file available for viewing.
You can click any of those files to preview it without exiting the WinZip application. You can view any of the file types I listed in the previous section from an email.
Viewing Files from the Web
Not only does the WinZip iPhone application work with files sent to you through email, it also allows you to view files from the web browser. If you are sharing a compressed file in Dropbox, or somewhere on the web, this is a quick convenient way to view the files contained within.
The method for opening files from the web is similar to email. All you need to do is click on the file and click ”Open in WinZip.” Just like with email, it will pop open the WinZip application, and allow you to click and view each of the files.
